Giselle Bundchen and Worldwide Breastfeeding Week…

August 6, 2010

Now in its 19th year, Worldwide Breastfeeding week organised by The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) aims to improve professional support for breastfeeding mums. It also ties in with the UN’s Millenium development goals of improving maternal health and reducing infant mortality, all in all a very important week.

Here’s a good video that shows you how it’s done:

Someone else who’s been rather outspoken about the importance of breastfeeding this week is Gisele Bundchen. The gorgeous Brazilian model and new mum declared that she thinks there should be an international law that all mothers should breastfeed for at least 6 months! This is the same woman who was back to swimwear modelling six weeks after giving birth to her baby… (any other mere mortals out there keen to know her secrets?)

We obviously support breastfeeding, but we also think it’s REALLY important that women aren’t guilt-tripped (and at times, bullied) into feeling like they have to breastfeed. Be it physiological or psychological, there are plenty of valid reasons why it sometimes simply doesn’t work. God knows they’ll be other things they’ll feel bad about, so let’s not propagate this myth of the ‘perfect’ mother. Naughty Gisele.
